What to know about Runway
Frame the shot before you upload
Gen-4.5 sticks closely to your photo, so get the composition right first. Leave space on the side the camera will move toward, and crop out anything you don’t want viewers to notice.
Move the camera or the subject
Pick one: the camera slides past a still subject, or the subject moves in a fixed frame. Asking for both in a 5-second clip is where hands and edges start to warp.

A very slow push toward the bowl of oranges. The fruit and bowl don’t move. Soft window light and a steady background.
A small move like this is a good first test before trying an orbit.
Travel pull-back
Start close on the woman standing at the cliff edge, then pull back slowly to reveal the coastline and the sea below. She stays still, looking out. Smooth, steady movement.
Needs a photo with plenty of landscape around the person.
Camera moves that work well with Gen-4.5
Gen-4.5 is at its best when the camera does one clear thing. These moves are reliable starting points:
- Push-in: the camera moves slowly toward the subject. Good for products and portraits.
- Slide: the camera moves sideways past a still subject. Good for rooms, shelves and landscapes.
- Pull-back reveal: start close and move back to show the setting. Needs a photo with space around the subject.
- Locked-off: the camera stays still and only the subject moves, like hair in the wind or a slow turn.
Avoid full orbits around products unless you’re fine with the model inventing the back. The photo only shows one side.

Where it is weaker: there’s no audio here, clips stop at 10 seconds, and fast body movement or close-up hands can still distort. Keep people calm and the camera slow.
Picking the right aspect ratio
Gen-4.5 supports six shapes here. 16:9 fits YouTube and websites, 9:16 fits Reels, Shorts and TikTok, and 1:1 works for feeds and ads. 4:3 and 3:4 suit presentations and Pinterest-style layouts. 21:9 is for wide cinematic banners.
Crop your photo to the same shape before uploading. If the photo and the output shape don’t match, the model has to fill or cut the edges, which can move your subject off center.
Common Gen-4.5 problems and fixes
Most failed Gen-4.5 clips come down to a handful of causes:
- The camera moves the wrong way: name the direction and a landmark, like ‘the camera slides left toward the bookshelf’.
- Objects bend near the edges: shorten the move, or crop the photo so fewer objects touch the edge of the frame.
- The subject moves when it shouldn’t: add ‘the person stays completely still’ and slow the camera down.
- Almost nothing happens: add a speed and a destination, like ‘slowly pushes in until the bottle fills the frame’.
- Faces look soft in wide shots: use a closer crop so the face takes up more of the frame.
